A Cruise Terminal Design by Royal Haskoning

The design of a cruise terminal and the surrounding infrastructure is defined by the aspirations of the port owner and the cruise company that will use the facility. The overall success of the facility is determined by the experience that the passengers have and their willingness to return in future.

There are two different types of cruise terminal:

	Home/Turnaround Port The home port is where passengers either join or leave a cruise; this facility requires all the necessary security and baggage handling equipment along with consideration for car parking, taxi and coach collection and drop off points etc.
	Call Port A call port however is a berth where a cruise liner will visit for a day or so allowing passengers to visit local sites etc and requires minimal facilities;

It is possible to combine the two types of facilities into one although this is unusual.

Royal Haskoning understand that a home port (turnaround) cruise terminal is made up from several key functions that must integrate with one another and at no time provide a bottle-neck for the smooth operational processes that enhance our clients’ customer’s satisfaction of using that particular port as a departure point location for their cruise.

Terminal Access

Passenger: From arriving at the terminal whether it be by coach, taxi (requiring temporary parking points), or viathere own vehicle (requiring long term parking) a cruise passenger should experience easy access to the terminal building having located a baggage trolley and the baggage drop off points.
Vehicle: A cruise terminal is likely to require the provision of bunkering the vessel which means access to the quayside adjacent to the vessel for any number of vehicles carrying anything from entertainment equipment to food produce and fuel. All these vehicles also require easy access around the terminal building without causing hold ups to the constant arrival of the passenger traffic.

Terminal Building

Once inside the terminal building room sizing and the layout is very important as well as an agreed level of comfort to be provided. This also follows through to the departure lounge which does vary according to which Cruise Company is to use the facility.

Baggage

Provision for baggage security screening and provision to get large numbers of baggage to the vessel and load them through doors which generally are below the quay line is a further consideration.

Vessel Access

When the vessel is ready to receive the passengers the provision for their safe access onto the vessel onto the passenger reception deck which tend to be several metres above the quay is once again an area in which Royal Haskoning have unrivalled expertise.

Similarly the disembarking passengers will expect to have a safe route to the baggage collection areas and then onward to taxi’s or coaches close to hand or to their own vehicles within easy access
