jetty

Project Name:

Oikos No. 2 Jetty proposed jetty extension

Country:

United Kingdom

Client:

Oikos Storage Ltd

Year:

2008

Oikos Storage Ltd. (Oikos) holds a long lease on 165 acres of the 200 acre ‘riverside’ site on Canvey Island owned by the Port of London Authority (PLA). Since 1936 Oikos have operated an oil products import, storage and distribution business; in recent years the bulk of this business has been aviation fuels. Jetty No. 2 is nearly central to the Oikos waterfront and was constructed in the 1960’s, but has been out of use since the 1970’s.

Oikos proposed constructing a new jetty at a similar location along the river frontage as the disused Jetty No.2. The berthing face of this jetty will be positioned further offshore to enable larger vessels to use the berth. It was proposed that the disused Jetty No.2 approach structure could be refurbished and re-used to provide access to the new jetty.

The approach structure consisted of a reinforced concrete superstructure consisting of longitudinal, transverse and diagonal beams which were supported by steel box piles formed of back-to-back Larssen sheet piles welded along the clutch.

Royal Haskoning was commissioned to assess the condition of No.2 jetty and recommend remedial measures that might be necessary to determine if the structure could be utilised for the possible future development. The structural assessment included undertaking an above and below water inspection of all elements of the structure including using non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques. Ultrasonic thickness measurements were undertaken on a representative sample of the steel box piles to calculate the residual life of the piles.

Marmara Power Plant

Project Name:

Power Plant Outlet Pipe Inspection

Country:

Turkey

Client:

Unimar Enerji Yatirimlari

Year:

2007 (annually)

Royal Haskoning has worked for this client for many years and were asked to undertake works associated with the cooling water (CW) outlet pipe from the Marmara Ereglisi power-plant.

A general visual inspection was carried out within the CW outlet pipe over a length of approximately 60m where repairs to defects had previously been undertaken. The diving contractor undertook measurements within the pipe in order to determine the vertical and horizontal dimensions. Royal Haskoning analysed the data in comparison with similar measurements taken in January 2007 and compiled a report of the findings.
