Felixstowe Underwater Inspection

Project Name:

Felixstowe Bollard B1 to B43 Underwater Inspection

Country:

United Kingdom

Client:

Felixstowe Dock and Railway Company

Year:

2006

Royal Haskoning was commissioned in June 2006 to carry out an underwater inspection of the quay walls at the Port of Felixstowe. The inspection covered the walls between bollards B1 to B43, which totalled approximately 1040m in length. The quay is an anchored sheet piled wall, approximately 12m high, made up from Larssen and Frodingham piles with an internal waling at approximately 2/3 height from bed level. The purpose of the inspection was to obtain evidence of Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) and identify evidence of deterioration and other significant defects prior to the possible installation of a cathodic protection system.

Ras Lanuf breakwater

Project Name:

Ras Lanuf repairs to breakwaters

Country:

Libya

Client:

Ras Lanuf Oil & Gas Processing Co., Inc.

Year:

2004 - 2005

Two breakwaters were constructed in Ras Lanuf, Libya in the 1980’s surrounding an oil and gas processing plant. Over time, minor damage occurred to the Tetrapod armour units, which required repairs to be undertaken in order to maintain the integrity of the structure. Royal Haskoning was commissioned to carry out the site supervision of the repair works including underwater inspections.

The Tetrapods had originally been placed in a symmetrical pattern and over time had moved due to wave action, which resulted in a tight interlocking of the units. Therefore, the broken sections were difficult to remove and frequently required the removal and replacement of intact Tetrapods in order to carry out a satisfactory repair. The contractor underestimated the time necessary to complete the works and the contract was successfully completed in September 2005, eleven months later than the initial programme.

Woolwich Ferry Crossing

Project Name:

Woolwich Free Ferry principal inspection

Country:

United Kingdom

Client:

Transport to London

Year:

2003

Royal Haskoning was commissioned to carry out a condition survey on the underwater elements of the Woolwich Ferry crossing the River Thames. The underwater inspection was part of a multidisciplinary structural inspection of the entire berthing facilities servicing the ferries.

The underwater survey included the piled approaches with timber fendering, berthing dolphins, walkways and lifting towers. The structures were inspected below water using a diving engineer from Royal Haskoning’s underwater services section.

The structures were found to be in a reasonable state of repair for a structure of this nature and future maintenance recommendations were included in the final report.
