Dun Laoghaire Harbour

Project Name:

Dun Laoghaire Harbour - St Michael's pier underwater inspection

Country:

United Kingdom

Client:

Dun Laoghaire Harbour Co.

Year:

2002

Royal Haskoning has carried out underwater engineering inspections at Dun Laoghaire over the past ten years. These have included condition surveys of the suspended jetty piles with recommendations for underwater repairs.

In 2002 further surveys were carried out to a sheet piled wall to assess the loss of fill material behind the wall, the condition of drainage valves and corrosion to the sheet piling.

Royal Haskoning has also carried out design services of marine works associated with the passenger access facility, built in 1995. This prestigious project comprised 1.5 hectares of reclamation, a new terminal building of airport standard, and a revolutionary linkspan designed by Nor-Ent AB of Sweden.

TFE oil re-fuelling jetty

Project Name:

TFE oil re-fuelling jetty, Milford Haven underwater inspections

Country:

United Kingdom

Client:

Mott MacDonald, as consultants to TFE

Year:

2002

Royal Haskoning carried out extensive underwater inspections of the TFE (TotalFinaElf) Oil Re-fuelling Jetty at Milford Haven, Wales. Visual inspections were required on over 400 tubular steel piles, in water depths up to 28 metres.  The survey included ultrasonic thickness readings on 20% of the piles, and reporting on the condition of the associated corrosion protection system.

The jetty is used for the import and export of crude oil and its by-products for TFE’s refinery at Milford Haven. The inspection provided a statement of condition to the client, with maintenance recommendations, which will provide a useful baseline for future monitoring.

The inspection was carried out as a subconsultancy agreement with Mott MacDonald, who undertook the above water surveys of the jetty.

Kamsar Port project location

Project Name:

Kamsar Port - Bauxite loading quay underwater pile inspection

Country:

Republic of Guinea

Client:

Compagnie des Bauxite de Guinea

Year:

1993 - present

Inspections on the bauxite loading jetties have been undertaken over the past 16 years and initially was commissioned in March 1993 to establish the condition of piling on a bauxite loading quay, following a major underwater repair contract on the approach jetty. The piles are 2.0m diameter reinforced concrete within a non-structural steel casing. Thirty-one piles were inspected visually/by touch, and by probing using an explosive bolt gun, and pneumatic tools. Additionally during the survey extra works were arranged to undertake ships hull inspection, and inspect accidental berthing damage to one of the quay’s fenders.

Royal Haskoning provided diving engineers, arranged a suitable contractor, prepared contract documents and reported on the results of the inspection. As a non-destructive testing technique the use of explosive bolting is relatively new for works underwater.

The inspection undertaken in April 2002 identified various immediate remedial works were required on the concrete piles and also on the Rio Nunez and Kataba rail bridge piers supplying bauxite from the quarry. The remedial works were undertaken in April 2003 and required Royal Haskoning diving engineers to supervise the six week contract. Further inspection were carried out in March 2005.
