Ennore Coal Port Project
India
Chennai Port Trust

The project consisted of the planning, design and supervision of construction of a new coal port near Chennai (formerly known as Madras). After the formulation of a Master Plan, the construction design was worked out for rubble mound breakwaters (4 km), dredging works (13 million m³), land reclamation (5 million m³), a 600 meter coal wharf for 65,000 DWT bulk carries, 3 jetties for small craft, access via rail and road as well for other terrestrial port infrastructure and various onshore facilities and utilities. The design was based on the results of extensive field investigation programs, together with the outcome of wave hindcast studies, probabilistic and physical modelling of breakwaters and fast time and real time ship manoeuvring studies. After preparation of the tender documents, Royal Haskoning provided assistance with the selection of contractors, complete construction supervision of all works and contract management for all 13 construction and supply contracts inclusive the construction and installation of all navigational aids and the supply of 3 tugs and 2 pilot crafts. Official inauguration of the new port took place in 2001.
