Introduction Print

The Information Management and Geographic Information Systems (IM and GIS) group of Royal Haskoning is comprised of a dedicated team of information technology specialists.  The UK based team’s expertise is based on practical experience gained through more than fifteen years of implementing solutions both in-house and for our external client base which ranges from local to national scale interests.

Our philosophy is to add value to our client’s projects and is built upon the core principles of: delivery on budget; meeting deadlines; realising client requirements and critically maintaining good communication throughout.

IT solutions can sometimes be over engineered, leading to significant cost overruns, delivery delays and products which are ultimately not fit for purpose.  This is why it is crucial that IT involvement is at an early stage of any project, so a practical and appropriate solution can be delivered.  The best solution is not always the one using the latest technology or that seems to have all of the latest jargon and buzzwords, often the simpler solution is best.

All projects now employ IT solutions in some areas, but many could be enhanced by implementation of IT in specific key tasks.  The following tasks within a project can all benefit from IT solutions: data analysis; distribution of information; presentation of information; project collaboration; project management and project work.

Our areas of expertise cover GIS, Databases, Communication, Tools, Utilities and Programming, within which the team has capabilities including:

•    CAD tools and customisation.
•    Cartography / mapping.
•    Database design and development.
•    GIS analysis (3D and Spatial).
•    GIS design and development.
•    GIS tools and customisation.
•    Intranet / extranet design and development.
•    Marine spatial planning and constraint mapping.
•    Microsoft Office tools and customisation.
•    Presentational support.
•    Project collaboration / file sharing website design and development.
•    Standalone software development and programming.
•    Web and database questionnaires.
•    Website design and development.

These capabilities are employed across a range of platforms by utilising specialist software within a Windows environment or platform independent technologies such as Java, Python, Perl and PHP.

A key element of our solutions is the use of Open Source software to provide alternatives to proprietary, “off the shelf”, packages to enable greater flexibility and potential for customisation to better meet the needs of the project.
