Royal Haskoning has acquired a long and varied experience of working within the defence sector and in particular within Naval Bases and other military establishments.

Western Jetties, HM Naval Base, PortsmouthThrough many years of working in military bases, and with defence sector clients, Royal Haskoning has gained a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of defence related procedures and standards, including those related to design, safety and security.

Royal Haskoning has worked extensively within all the primary UK Naval Bases, comprising Portsmouth, Devonport, Rosyth and Faslane, as well as other military establishments including Marchwood Military Port, RNAD Gosport, RNAD Coulport and RM Turnchapel, Plymouth.

The firm has also worked in Naval Bases throughout the world including Gibraltar, India, New Zealand and Holland. Projects have been diverse, ranging from the planning and design of Naval Base jetties for the berthing of capital warships, the design of transit sheds for the storage of armaments, to the planning and design of military base infrastructure and buildings.

Royal Haskoning’s primary role in Naval Bases and military ports has been in the planning and design of maritime infrastructure. The firm has designed many facilities including quays, jetties, dolphins, dockside paving and mechanical/electrical services.

Western Jetties, HM Naval Base, PortsmouthThe firm has a particular expertise in shipyards and associated infrastructure and has for many years provided design services in this field for Naval Bases throughout the world.

These have included the conceptual and detailed design of drydocks, slipways, shiplifts, floating docks, shipyard buildings and associated ship repair facilities.

A particular specialism of the firm is the analysis and design of drydock gates, and this specialism has been employed at many naval and commercial establishments for the smallest mitre and caisson gates to the largest flap and gravity gates in the world.

The firm has considerable experience in the analysis existing of dock gates for checking structural integrity and floatation characteristics, and has developed specialist software to do this.
