Capability Statement Oil and Gas Maritime Facilities
Arctic region
Shell Global Solutions (SGS)

For the development of gas fields in the Arctic region (e.g. Beaufort Sea, Yamal peninsula, Chukchi sea), SGS is interested in the use of artificial islands for the processing and loading of LNG to be exported by LNG carriers, as an alternative to gravity based or floating structures. Severe ice loads require strict protection measures which can be efficiently provided with a reclaimed artificial island if environmental parameters and available materials allow it.

Royal Haskoning was appointed to conduct a conceptual study into this kind of artificial islands and to provide guidance for the decision making process regarding the applicability, required protection level for waves and ice, best fit shape etc. A base case concept was developed taking into account relatively severe wave an ice loading and year-round operation. Construction cost and time estimates and a parametric study were carried out and a decision making tool was produced to support future development of Artificial Islands of this type by SGS.

Brief Description

Dar es Salaam SPM feasibility Project
Tanzania
Tanzania Port Authorities

The existing SPM offshore Dar es Salaam, was built in the 1970s and is used for the import of crude oil. Originally the SPM was used for the import of crude oil for the refineries of both Tanzania and Zambia. After the closure of the refinery in Tanzania, it is currently only used for the import of crude oil for Zambia. Recent surveys have shown that the pipeline connecting the pipeline to onshore storage is severely corroded and needs urgent replacement.

Royal Haskoning was appointed to study the feasibility of the construction of a new SPM. The study comprised an oil market assessment including the Tanzania market as well as regional markets. It was found that in addition to importing oil products it is also feasible to set up a hub for distribution of oil products to countries with small markets and small ports that are now being served from the Gulf by small vessels. The study was concluded with a design including construction schedule and cost estimate.
