Malliag Harbour Breakwater Quay wall deepening

The size of commercial vessels has grown substantially over the last 50 years, driven by economies of scale and advancements in technology and handling techniques. Recently this has been the case in container shipping. Increasing pressure is put on ports to provide deeper berths in order to retain their customers or attract new ones. In many cases the most appropriate solution is to deepen the existing berths, particularly as environmental concerns make obtaining approvals for the construction of new facilities more difficult.

Royal Haskoning applies its extensive experience of quay deepening projects and innovative thinking to develop appropriate and economic solutions.

Quay wall refurbishment

Existing quays may be in a state of dilapidation or lack the facilities required by a modern port or shipyard. We have provided traditional reconstruction solutions to existing quay walls, innovative ideas for new construction incorporating existing walls, and standalone additions to improve facilities.

Developments in naval ship design are frequently requiring the strengthening or deepening of existing quays in naval dockyards. We can provide design solutions to improve berthing facilities at these locations to include, if necessary, the refurbishment or protection of historic sea walls and other heritage structures.

Corrosion control

Anaerobic corrosion, often known as “accelerated low water corrosion”, is bacteria induced and apparently random in its occurrence. It results in extreme corrosion attack on steel maritime structures usually, but not necessarily, at low tide levels.

We have expanding experience of this phenomenon, its identification and remedial options.

No installation should be assumed to be immune from possible attack. The requirements of refurbishment, deepening, and dealing with corrosion can be diverse but combined in varying degrees.

Royal Haskoning has extensive experience in finding the right solutions, and in helping clients to implement them.
