Container Terminals

When port operators and managers set out to develop container terminal facilities, their chief consideration is obtaining an optimum return on their investment.

So even before projects are officially sanctioned, important questions about the cost, time scales, availability of local resources and likely returns must be answered. Developers need to manage properly the risk if targeted costs and project times are to be achieved.

It is this need for expertise, detailed studies and experience that is answered by the container terminals team at Royal Haskoning.

Since designing the UK’s first purpose-built container terminal in 1967 we have become leaders in the field, working in 50 countries on assignments ranging from small scale developments to international mega hub ports.

Our global networks with government departments, port authorities and operators, materials suppliers and contractors in numerous local markets help us contribute to each new international project.

Our risk management approach begins with initial assessments, preliminary feasibility studies and initial cost estimates. These are particularly cost effective ways of establishing whether desired projects are worth pursuing.

When the results of initial investigations are promising, a more detailed study can be commissioned to establish accurately the technical and operational feasibility of the project.

Factors like the availability of a local labour force, communication links and suitable infrastructure are all considered. Along with this study, a detailed plan and cost estimate can be produced. Once approval is given, our team can design all the structures and supporting infrastructure that go to create the facility itself.

Our unique terminal simulation model is often used to compare various possible terminal layouts, taking into account the growing size of vessels and increased traffic. When final designs are produced, they are used toseek tenders from appropriate contractors.

Once construction begins, our active project management service includes site supervision independent of contractors. By remaining on site throughout construction, we can make quick decisions as new issues arise, because we draw on experience gained when planning and designing the project. This supervision, along with a risk management approach throughout the project, helps to keep developments on target in respect of time, quality and budget.

Having worked for a large number of port clients for whom rapid completion and maximum economy have been of prime importance, Royal Haskoning has always responded to produce the most appropriate designs within the tightest timescales and budgets.
