Port of Felixstowe - Trinity III Container Terminal Print

Port of Felixstowe/Costain.
United Kingdom.

Port of FelixstoweTrinity III is the largest deep water container terminal development to be completed at the Port of Felixstowe. The expansion provided an additional 630m length of berth and 200m of container stacking behind. The first berth was opened in 10 months and the civil works completed within 14 months. Including
equipment this £45 million project provided the Port of Felixstowe with facilities to be able to handle 7,000 TEU vessels.

Royal Haskoning was design engineer for Costain who were awarded the design and build contract following a prequalified tender process. Initial site works comprised the dredging of 2 million m3 of sand and gravel which was used for reclamation. Part of the reclamation was used to form an environmental bund 1200m long to provide a visual and noise barrier to an adjacent bird sanctuary.

Quay wall construction incorporated the Combi system of piling with twin tie rods to each 1700 diameter tubular pile. To provide corrosion protection the face of the intermediate sheet piles was cased in concrete from the underside of the capping beam to below LAT. In the area of the container park the reclamation was placed over foreshore silt and to avoid excessive settlement wick drains were installed and surcharged with 2.5m of reclamation material to accelerate consolidation. Following completion of 120,000m2 of concrete block pavement, future settlement was designed to be less than 300mm with little differential settlement, thereby avoiding problems in the operation of container park equipment.
