Palm Island Crescent BreakwaterThe Palm Island project is a leisure, residential and tourist development built in the Arabian Gulf off the coast of Dubai. The island built in the shape of a palm tree consists of 17 fronds and trunk along with a protective crescent shaped breakwater.

The island measures 6 km in diameter. Royal Haskoning was responsible for the final design of the sea defence part of the crescent breakwater.

The protective breakwater surrounding the island measures approximately 11 km and is 200 metres in width. At the outer sea side of the breakwater a rubble mound sea defence is designed, whereas at the inner leeside of the breakwater a recreational beach is planned. For water quality reasons the breakwater is given two gaps, in order to allow enough water circulation within the island.

The most important activities by Royal Haskoning were (1) the review and confirmation of the environmental design conditions, (2) the definition and supervision of 2/3D scale model tests and (3) the establishment of the final design of the sea defence part of the crescent breakwater.
