Benchmarking and competitiveness Print

Past competitiveness studies have established a correlation between the use of best practice, output performance and profitability.  Therefore to achieve the desired performance, a shipyard must be correctly configured and employ appropriate processes and practices for its product mix and cost base.

We use the FMI shipyard benchmarking system to assess the processes and practices employed, to compare them to international best practice and to specify what needs to done to achieve market success.  The system has been applied in excess of 150 shipyards worldwide and is applicable to commercial and naval shipbuilding, ship repair, and naval support.  The system has also has formed the foundation of major industry-wide performance improvement projects for the European Commission, the US Department of Defense and the UK Ministry of Defence.

Our service includes:

• Company and industry benchmarking including technology profiling

• Target setting for overall shipyard performance and the performance of individual processes

• Specification of the appropriate organisation, cost structure, processes and practices

• Development of immediate or long-term action plans to improve competitiveness

• Operational assistance including training and the management of change
