The World

Project Name:

The World - Barrier Reef

Country:

United Arab Emirates (Dubai)

Client:

Nakheel

Year:

2003 – 2007

The design of the protection of The World against storm waves in the Persian Gulf was awarded to Royal Haskoning. To enhance the required natural appearance of The World further, this protection has been designed as a series of low crested reef breakwaters: The World Barrier Reef.

The largest reef breakwater was provided with a 32 m wide berm at 2.5 m below mean sea level, initiating severe wave breaking under design storm conditions. As a result, the crest at the rear of this berm extends only 2 m above mean sea level and is only 9m wide, thus giving a minimum of visual hindrance towards the open sea. Because of its shallow depth, the berm is also expected to attract and provide shelter for a wealth of marine life.

Bridlington

Project Name:

Yorkshire Marina at Bridlington

Country:

United Kingdom, England

Client:

East Riding of Yorkshire Council

Year:

1999 - Present

Royal Haskoning undertook an integrated approach to the design of the new works, preparing feasibility studies on the engineering and environmental aspects of the grant-aided scheme in close association with architectural and planning considerations. The historic nature of the port required that a Public Inquiry be held into the new scheme and various conditions with regard to the listed structures have been incorporated into the design.

Preliminary surveys are now underway as a first step to procuring an economically viable scheme whilst enhancing the historic setting of the original harbour.
